Confined Spaces Entry Course (Low & Medium Risk)
Course: TQUK Level 2 Award – Confined Space Entry (Low & Medium Risk) & Top Person (NC1, NC2 + NC3)
Duration: 1 day
Suitable for:
All personnel who have to enter Low and Medium Risk confined spaces and act as a Top Person (Safety Attendant).
Course Aim:
The aim of this course is to prepare candidates to enter, working and exit low and medium risk confined spaces safely. It involves training on Access Equipment (Tripod & Winch system, Rescue Retrievers), Confined Space Rescue harnesses, Atmospheric monitoring equipment, Ventilation, use of 15 minutes Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus, Confined Space communications, and the duties of the Top Person (Safety Attendant).
The course includes underpinning knowledge of Confined Space Legislation, identification of confined spaces and their associated hazards, awareness of confined space risk assessments, principles of Safe Systems of Work for Confined Space Operations and the legal requirement and importance of a Confined Space Rescue Plan.
Practical exercises are completed using our purpose built confined space training simulator, within which delegates will descend/ascend and traverse a designated confined space, wearing an approved safety harness and breathing apparatus with face mask/hood. Delegates will be expected to crawl through over 36 metres of variably sized and shaped tunnels under various simulated emergency conditions that include; noise, limited light, and variable safe atmospheric conditions including smoke.
This course is delivered within the framework of the National Occupational Standards for Confined Space Training.

Please Note: This Confined Space Entry Course includes the use of 15 minutes Emergency Escape Breathing Apparatus (Escape Set), but does NOT qualify personnel in the use of full breathing apparatus (please see High Risk Entry Course for full BA use).

Certification
All candidates who successfully complete the course will receive a TQUK E-Certificate for Confined Space Entry (Low & Medium Risk) & Top Person Course and a photo site card, valid for three years.
City & Guilds Accredited Confined Space Entry Course (Medium Risk)

Visual Examples – Confined Space Entry
Low Risk Confined Space
A low risk confined space exists where there is easy entry/exit and natural ventilation.
NC1 Classification
Low risk shallow entry with adequate natural or mechanical ventilation, where access is simple and unobstructed and there is no likely risk of flooding. E.g. meter pits, valve chambers, booster-pumping stations, PRV chambers.
No breathing apparatus required for low risk
Medium Risk Confined Space
A medium risk confined space exists where there are access issues; a realistic expectation of encountering a specific risk; possible introduction of specified risks during the work activity.
NC2 Classification
Vertical direct unobstructed access with continuous attachment to a man riding hoist or similar mechanical rescue device.
Escape Set (Self Rescue) breathing apparatus required to be taken into medium risk.
Medium Risk Confined Space
NC3 Classification
When it is not possible to have persons permanently attached to a safety line.
Usually it will be a team entry which moves away from the entry point.
E.g. Man entry sewers, utility service subway tunnels, aqueducts and complex wet walls. Working without an attached rescue line and includes working away from the point of entry.
Escape Set (Self Rescue) breathing apparatus required to be taken into medium risk.
High Risk Confined Space
A high risk confined space exists when there is a specified hazard that cannot be controlled or eliminated.
NC4 Classification
Non standard entries involving complex operations which introduce additional risks and require specific controls and rescue arrangements. Eg: mechanical hazards, physical complexity of system introduced hazards, enhanced specific intrinsic hazards.
Full breathing apparatus (working) required to be worn at all times in high risk.
